(Climate) Change we can believe in

Just cruising through good ol' Facebook and getting incensed over small quips making fun of President Obama.

Okay, okay, okay. Karma, right? I did my share of taking jabs at Dubya over the past eight years. Now my pride is on the receiving end.

But I realize, it's not about Obama. Things I'm reading are attacks at Obama because these people don't believe or understand Climate Change and Global Warming. What?! Are you kidding me?! They are protesting undeniable scientific evidence and concern for our future.

"Wednesday's 65-degree high the coolest July 8 in 118 years in Chicago... Isn't that Obama's city??? How's your global warming?"

"The cool temperature is directly proportional to the amount of hell thats freezing over as the socialist "change" continues under the name of liberalism. So see our fearless leader really is doing something to halt climate change. Ha."

"Changing the light bulbs in the White House has really improved the climate!....His cap and trade bill will cost the average family of 4 an extra $3000 a year. Do you think American families can afford this???"

WHAT?!!! Wow. WOW.

I guess it's not surprising as lots of people still refute evolution. Evolution!

I'm not prepared to argue that cap-and-trade is a good solution, but f*ck it--how are we going to control the emissions that are unquestionably polluting our air, warming the globe, driving plants and animals toward extinction, and altering our way of life in irreversible ways? isn't this is a relatively market-friendly solution towards alleviating one of the problems? Maybe not. Maybe we're realizing there is no market-friendly solution that will curb our carbon emissions when we can't count on other countries to do the same, save for adopting new, cleaner technologies at home and assigning true costs to things like pollution and waste.

There will be no easy answers, that's the one sure thing. But denying the problem is only making the situation worse. Denial. These people are the alcoholics of carbon emissions I guess. And there needs to be a 12 step program for that addiction.

  1. Dubya re-installed Solar Panels at the White House in 2002 and Laura B. installed LEDs and CFLs. Cap & Trade is an energy tax that will raise the cost of everything and doesn't fix anything. I'm just saying.

  2. I agree it won't solve the world's problems if the rest of the world (namely China and India) doesn't follow suit. But who can blame them? As a developed/post-Industrial nation, we have the privilege of being cozy and secure, with the leisure time to learn that we are killing the Earth and all of Nature.

I found an old article which says this:

"Raising taxes on energy is the surest way to reduce demand, which in the long run may make for both a cleaner environment and lower energy prices...

"The point is that McCain, Clinton, and Obama all favor big hikes in the prices consumers pay for fossil fuels, including gasoline." (source:http://taxvox.taxpolicycenter.org/blog/_archives/2008/5/6/3678512.html)

Cool to know Bush installed some panels--wonder why it was so quiet? His ranch in TX is widely considered pretty environmentally friendly too. Funny thing is it's 4000-sqft and uses "25% of the electricity that traditional heating and cooling systems utilize"--and my house is 25% the size of it, so my house is apparently eco-friendly too!

  3. Dubya installing solar kept quiet, are you serious?
Since September 2002, a grid of 167 solar panels on the roof of a maintenance shed has been delivering electricity to the White House grounds.
From treehugger.com - As president-elect Barack Obama has identified dealing with our 'planet in peril' as a top priority of his administration, if I were him I’d start planning to put solar panels back on the White House roof and to have a re-dedication ceremony photo op with Jimmy Carter.
Back to my story - Jan. 8, 2003--Evergreen Solar, Inc. today announced the installation of a 9 kW photovoltaic (PV) system at the White House.
Things that make you say Hmmm.

  4. Not to confuse things, 2002 and 2003 were 2 separate projects by Dubya. 2003 was a system for the National Park Service.

  5. When I said "quiet", I was referring to what I read after Googling "George Bush install solar panels". An article from Feb 2009 wrote "George W. Bush quietly had three solar panels installed at the Whitehouse, which have mostly gone unnoticed. The solar panels are used to feed electricity to the cabana, for landscaping use and for the Whitehouse grid."
That article was the 10th result that came up, apparently right after the TreeHugger one.

The TreeHugger article referring to the 2003 installation says this: "The Bush Administration itself never really announced the project." And it sounds like it was the Park Service who came up with the idea... Not Bush.

Just saying. But still, it's not the point and I will concede that Bush did his part in some way.
