Yesterday was a group bike ride downtown, organized and led by local cycling celebrity, Zack Henkel, to raise money for the city's only independent radio station, WCRS. With probably a dozen cyclists, we covered a ton of ground in about an hour and a half, at a leisurely pace. This is expected to be a weekly event, so I hope to join the group again, regularly. I was super quiet and reserved, so didn't meet many people--an unfortunate trait of mine that I usually regret in hindsight. Overall it was great to be exposed to cycling in the city and a few of the locals. I realize that I might never be considered a "regular" or a "local" by some of these kids who are so close-knit and party together, but I hope I might make some friends...after a while. Gotta pay my dues, right? I'll mention I learned that fixed gear bikes might not be worth the trouble, as two riders ate mega-shit along our route.

Today I realized that a sub-culture, as it is locally contained or defined, is somewhat similar to a church. The members are focused on one thing, generally, and are united by it; events and regular congregation provide social interaction, strength, support; members then rely on the others for validation and support, like I've mentioned before... Since I don't attend a religious church, maybe that's why I invest so much time seeking out membership in various sub-cultures... Weird.
